The name 'Umber' likely comes from terra d'ombra or 'earth of Umbria', and is thought to have originated from the Umbria region of Italy..  The popularity of Umber pigments exploded during the Baroque period in Europe where it was relied upon to produce dark shadows in painting.  Raw Umber Dark Neutral is a dark, dull, earth brown, with a colour resembling dark chocolate.
